Los Angeles Jewish Community Survey, 1979

Sponsor(s): Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles

Principal Investigator(s): Bruce A. Phillips

Study Dates: 1979. Spring.

Population Estimates: 503,000 Jewish persons live in 220,000 Jewish households.
Sample: Adult Jewish Households in the Greater Los Angeles Area

Sample Size: 823

Sample Notes: RDD (random-digit dialed) telephone interviews with 823 individuals in households with one or more Jewish individuals - initial sampling frame was over 25,000 numbers.

The sampling universe included Jewish households located in Greater Los Angeles, as far north as Valencia, as far west as Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley, as far south as San Pedro and Wilmington, and as far east as Claremont.

Data set; as with many earlier studies, many variables are not clearly labeled, since the researcher had never planned on the data file being public.

Study Notes: Summary Report ("downloadable files")was written by Bruce Phillips for the 1986 American Jewish Yearbook and is the most comprehensive review of the 1979 study results in the context of the history of Jews in Los Angeles.

  • A series of tables at the end of the Summary Report provide detailed information from the survey.

Overview for Regional Planning" was written in 1980 by Dr. Phillips as the initial overview of the results of the study.

In 1987, Steven Huberman issued "Demographic Highlights" which updated the demography of the Jewish community based on the 1979 results and updates thereafter.

Also published in the 1986 American Jewish Yearbook , directly after the 1986 Summary of the LA study, was an article estimating the total number of Jews in California based on the Fields Poll in the state. It provides additional context for the report.
