South Broward Jewish Population Study, 1990

Sponsor
Jewish Federation of South Broward County
Principal Investigator
Dr. Gary A.Tobin, Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies, Brandeis University and Dr. Ira Sheskin, Department of Geography and Department of Judaic Studies, University of Miami
Study Dates
January-February, 1990
Population Estimates
An estimated 78,700 Jewish persons lived in 39,000 Jewish households in South Broward in 1990; approximately 70,700 are full-year residents (at least eight months).

Sample

Jewish Households in South Broward County, Florida. Geographic area includes Hollywood, Hallandale, Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Cooper City, Davie, as well as some other parts of Broward County south of State Road 84.
Sample Size
943 respondents via telephone interviews which averaged 40 minutes.
Sample Notes
943 interviews include: 415 from a random sample of the Federation's List, 472 interviews from RDD (random digit dialing), and 56 additional interviews from a special RDD subsample along South Ocean Drive in Hollywood, which had been highlighted by Federation staff as an area probably losing Jewish population quickly (these interviews are designated as "SOD" in data file variable "source").

Data file weight factor "WF" adjusts number of interviews to 932, and should be used for all analyses. Weighting factor adjusts for geographic oversampling (as in the South Ocean Drive interviews), and also adjusts the List interviews to statistically match the RDD interviews on demographic characteristics and Jewish organization membership. Chapter 2 of "Main" Report summarizes methodology.

Data are not weighted to project to the estimated 39,000 Jewish households.

Study Notes
South Broward 1990 study is part of series of studies (Hollywood 1971, Fort Lauderdale 1991) that were completed prior to the merger of separate federations into the Jewish Federation of Broward County in 1997. The 1997 Broward County Jewish Community Study provided the first comprehensive data on Jewish households in all areas of Broward County.
