2001 Census Analysis Series: The Jewish Community of Canada

Population Estimates
The estimated Jewish population of Canada was 370,520 in 2001.

Jews comprise 1.3% of the total population of Canada.

Key Findings
Series of reports based on the 2001 Census have been issued for Canadian Jews nationally; most of the reports includes separate reports for Canadian cities with significant Jewish populations (all available at the Data Bank).

The national reports on the Jewish Community of Canada include:

  • (1) Basic Demographics focuses on Jewish numbers, population trends, demographic characteristics, and places Canadian Jews in the context of Canadian ethnicity.

  • (2) Jewish Populations in Geographic Areas focuses on geographic distribution patterns and comparisons

  • (3) The Jewish Elderly report summarizes data on the number of Jewish seniors, Jewish seniors in poverty, Jewish survivors of the Nazi Holocaust living in Canada.

  • (4) The Jewish Poor focuses on Jewish poverty in Canada: poverty rate approximately 13%, and the working poor among Canada's Jews.

  • (5) Immigration and Language report notes that Jewish immigration to Canada is much higher than national average.

  • (6) Issues in Jewish Identity summarizes data on intermarriage (22% intermarriage rate, almost doubling since 1981), raising children as Jews (including in intermarried households), and Jewish education.

  • (7) Report # 7 focuses on the Jewish Family in Canada, and has additional intermarriage-related analyses. Only a national report was issued on this topic, which includes data comparisons among the most populous Jewish communities; data tables are available for each of the largest Jewish cities in Canada within each community's downloadable reports.
